Spider-Man Homecoming (Review)

I watched this movie yesterday, after I come home from a picnic in Kebun Raya Bogor. Honestly, I don't expect much from another Spider-Man Movie. I've watched 5 Spider-Man movies so I'm pretty sick of it, but I love Tom Holland portrayal as teenage Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War so I give this movie a chance. Here is my review about this movie!

This movie open up with the after effect of The Avengers' Battle of New York and reveal how Vulture, the main villain of this movie, engage in criminal activities. Then it shift to the story after Civil War, about the daily life of 15 years old Peter Parker. He wants to be a full-fledge Avenger & he's been waiting the call from Happy about his next mission, but he was told to be the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man instead. This movie is more about Peter Parker struggles on how to prove himself and become more mature rather than a superhero movies.

Here's what I like about this movie:

  • Tom Holland. I seriously must say sorry to underestimate his acting capabilities. I mean, I just saw him as the cheeky, comedic, kid version of Spider-Man in Civil War. I don't expect him to be so good at acting! There's this one plot twist, a big reveal towards the end of the movie and his acting in those scenes are so impressive, you can feel his struggle and deep emotion. I think those scenes are the highlight of the movie. In short, Tom Holland give a stellar performance as teenage Spider-Man!
  • All of the cast's performance are good. The villain is good & not one dimensional, Peter Parker's circle of friends and surrounding are good too.
Here's what I don't really like about this movie:
  • I think they can do better with the execution of some scenes, like the big revealing towards the end. It makes me kind of only remember some of important scenes in this movie and forgot the rest.
  • I love the reference of Spider-Man old song at the beginning of the movie but honestly the rest of the soundtrack felt flat.
Anyway, I think it's a fresh movie in Marvel Cinematic Universe. I get the same feeling I felt when I watched Ant Man. It's not a typical MCU movie and I recommend you to watch it.

Ant-Man (Review)

If there's something that I hate from superhero movies nowadays, it's their need to make everything go bigger. From bigger blast, bigger destruction, bigger action scenes. In short, there's this need for every superhero movies to make it looks like the earth is in peril & need to be saved. Well, Ant-Man movie is (thankfully) not like that.

This movie, at heart, is a movie about relationship of father & his daughter. Michael Douglas played Hank Pym, A former S.H.I.E.L.D agent and also a scientist who found a formula that allows its user to decrease in size but increase in strength. He's the former Ant-Man that had used this formula frequently in the war as a S.H.I.E.L.D agent, but his relationship with his daughter, Hope van Dyne (played by Evangeline Lily) is estranged due to the dead of his wife. On the other hand, there's this thief named Scott Lang (played by Paul Rudd) that desperate to find work to support his daughter & be a good dad. To make a long story short, Scott Lang become the successor of Hank Pym as Ant-Man.

What I love about this movie:
  1. It's different from other superheroes movies that I've watched
  2. The actors. Their actings are good. I love Paul Rudd as Ant-Man. I especially love Michael Peña as Luiz. He's so funny. Ha ha ha
  3. This movie is playful with lots of humor.
  4. It's touching to see father's love to his daughter in this movie. I always love movie about family's love.
What I don't like:
  1. The music & music score. It's so so & it's not give me memorable impression.
  2. As with almost all superhero movies that I've watch, I feel the villain in this movie lack in depth.
From the eyes of many people, Ant-Man might be not your traditional superhero. His signature superpower is changing his size, and also ability to communicate with - wait for it - ant, which are not as flashy as Captain America, Thor or Iron Man. In this world where when you said superhero you imagine things like Superman (with his super-strength, super-speed, & vision powers), Ant-Man stands out because he doesn't have those things. But it doesn't mean that a movie about Ant-Man is not interesting. In my opinion, this comedic heist movie is funny, playful & enjoyable.

If you want a not-so-serious heist movie to make you laugh, touch your heart with warm family love & enjoy your day, I recommend you to watch it. But if you're the type that like to see car blows up, building wrecked, glassess shattered, & earth crumble, you might be a little bit dissapointed. Damage in this movie is relatively insignificant compared to the high stakes and city-shattering destruction that take place in most of other superheroes movie. But overall, I really like this movie I might watch it again.

Focus (movie review)

I watch it just because I have free ticket from my friend. I search about this movie on the internet and people say that it's a heist movie, similar with Now You See Me. That's why I get curious and end up watch it.

This movie is so so. It's not bad, but it's not good either. It could have been a good movie if they make the story more interesting. One of my main question when I watch it is, "Why do they make this movie? What for?". Because yes, this movie has no purpose whatsoever. What is it trying to told us? Nothing. It's just a showcases of many tricks and tricks without meaning. It's still an enjoyable movie though.

Kingsman the Secret Service

Honestly, I have a high expectation for this movie. First, the actors. This movie boast ensemble casts with high profile such as Colin Firth, Michael Caine, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Strong, even Mark Hamill. Second, it's a movie about spy and I love spy movie. Moreover, it's a movie about spy in suit. How cool is that? It's no wonder that at first I thought it will be a serious spy movie so I'm surprised when it's turn out to be a comedy.

What I love about this movie:

  • The actors. Their actings are good.
  • The music score. I love Henry Jackman's score so much.
  • The premise, the action, the equipments are all cool.

What I don't like:

  • Its highly stylized violence. I've watch Kick-Ass, so I'm familiar with it. But that doesn't mean I'm a fan of it. Generally, I don't like violence in a film. That's why I seldom watch war movies.
  • Some of the scenes that was mean to be a comedy are tasteless.
  • The villain use omkara pendant. Omkara is a sacred symbol in my religion so I was uncomfortable to see the villain use it. But it's okay though... I will also feel uncomfortable if the hero use it.
Overall, I enjoy this movie (I watch it 2 times) & will still recommend you to watch it.

Shaun The Sheep Movie

As you might know from so many post here, I love animation movie & Shaun the Sheep is one of my favorite animation. So it's not surprising when there's a movie about it, I decide to watch it without many hesitation.

The story open with how Shaun was really frustrated with his monotone daily routine in the farm. That's why he want a holiday and prepare plan to make it happen. Sadly, all of his plan went wrong, initiating a series of hilarious events.

Overall, this movie is good. But I think it's not really different with the usual animation of Shaun the Sheep on TV. The only difference is the duration was longer. It's funny so you will laugh a lot in the movie theater, particularly for children. When I watch this movie, there's so many children in the theater and their funny laugh was also one of the entertainment source for me. Am I weird to said such thing? He he he. By the way, I don't really recommend this movie for people who do not like Shaun the Sheep animation on TV but I would really recommend it for your kids.

The Imitation Game (Review)

I love movie. I love history. I love cryptography. I love to hear inspiring story about real people in this world. And I love Benedict Cumberbatch. Owing to those facts about me, it's not surprising that I really enjoy this movie. There's so many people recommended this  and it really met my high expectation.

The Imitation Game is a movie about Alan Turing, a genius mathematician, pioneering computer scientist, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher, mathematical biologist, marathon and ultra distance runner, that help to solve the Enigma Code during World War II. He was highly influential in the development of computer science, providing a formalization of the concepts of "algorithm" and "computation" with the Turing machine, which can be considered a model of a general purpose computer. Alan Turing is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. People said that his involvement in solving Enigma Code shorten the war for about 2 - 3 years. That's why I really curious about him and his story.

Overall, this movie is great. For a historical movie, it's not boring at all. The production design is really nice. The acting are superb. I also love the music score of this movie. The only thing that make me a little bit disappointed is the accuracy of history that was depicted here. They include many things that didn't happened in real life to add more tension and drama in this movie. But still, it was one of the best movie that I ever watch and left good impression. I recommend all of you to watch this movie. What do you think about The Imitation Game? Comment below and let me know ^^.

The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies (Review)

I'm really looking forward for this movie as it is the last movie from The Hobbit trilogy. If you don't know, I'm a huge fan of Martin Freeman and can't wait to see his acting again. So, without too many chit chat, let me tell you my opinion!

The Great
Martin Freeman as Bilbo and Richard Armitage as Thorin are the most precious things from this movie. They gave the most stirring performance in this film that worth your ticket money. All my favorite scenes from this movie are always about their beautiful friendship and interaction.

The Good
As expected, the battle scenes looks extravagant with lots of violence.
Lee Pace as Thranduil.
Ryan Gage as Alfrid creates many laughters.
All cast give good performance for their respective roles but they were given more stunt than lines so let's just say that they're underused.

The Bad
As you can see from my Desolation of Smaug review, I hate the added love story between Thauriel and Kili. It's so fake, unconvincing and empty, I cringe everytime I saw their scenes on the screen.

My verdict:
The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies is not magical, but it's still an entertaining movie. Some of the scenes might pissed off fan of the original book (for example, me ^^), but overall I still recommend you to watch it.
